âMademoiselle Katya DeLorenzo?â enquired a deep, resonant male French voice.
âOui?â Katya asked, with a sinking heart, thinking now what?
Sheâd had to answer it. It was the fourth time that day the words âUnknown Callerâ had flashed up on her screen, and it seemed likely they were just going to keep trying until she picked up. But Jack had been with her every other time and, after Celineâs bombshell, she was reluctant to answer any calls from people she didnât know, particularly not in his presence.
It had been two days since Celine broke the news of Jackâs real identity, and she had thought of nothing else since. Sheâd promised Celine she would tell him, and she really had been meaning to but every time she opened her mouth, she found she just couldnât do it.
She knew that he had to know; it was probably downright cruel not to explain immediately â but she also knew it meant that their days of being in this little bubble of love and togetherness might be numbered, and she found she wanted to hang onto what they had, in its simplest, most pure version, for as long as she possibly could.
She decided to not even look online, for now that she knew his real name, she knew she would find appeals and photos and evidence of his other life; a life in which people â other people â loved him deeply and wanted him with them.
She was nowhere near ready to let go of him, even though sheâd always known she might have to. She had never felt so jealous or confused â and guilty, that she was keeping those loved ones away from him for longer than necessary. Would he hate her for it?
Jack kept looking at her, with concern in his eyes, and asking if she felt OK. She would laugh it off as just âfeeling weirdâ, and that it was no doubt pregnancy hormones making her feel all over the place â which, in fairness, it probably was. One time he took her hand and said, seriously, âIâm sure that not knowing anything about who the father of your baby is must be truly horrible. I donât blame you for feeling emotional.â
But now she did know, and that was the problem! When he added, âBut I am one hundred per cent here for you, no matter what,â she burst into tears.
Jack hadnât seen her cry before, apart from at Ottoâs funeral, and he looked terrified as he took her in his arms and rocked her like a baby till she quietened down.
It would all come down to what his current relationship was with the woman calling herself his wife, Katya thought. That was what would determine her future, and the future of their new little family.
